STRAHAN to PORT ARTHUR, TASMANIA

FOLLOW OUR TASSIE TRAIL SO FAR

A. DEVONPORT

B. PRESERVATION BAY

C. MACKINTOSH DAM

D. STRAHAN is promoted as THE seaside destination in Tasmania.

While it is a pretty town, for us it had no soul. Saturday lunchtime you could shoot a canon through the harbour area.

We went to the waterfront pub for lunch and to watch Daniel’s horse race at Caulfield, most of the time we were the only one’s in there!
We did however enjoy our $10 per night camping right on the edge of the golf course. The golfers were fun and some were up for a chat.

E. ZEEHAN a small historic town on the west coast and again is very quiet.

We found a very interesting historic graveyard there.

G. HUONVILLE we love! It’s the gateway to the Huon Valley and Bruny Island. The facilities at the Huon Valley Caravan Park are the best and newest we have seen. It’s a working farm with animals everywhere and the owner is terrific.
Chooks that chase cars!!

Our friend Mary flew into Hobart while we were in Huonville, what a fun person to check out some attractions with.

On the top of Mt Wellington, overlooking Hobart
Mary is a Port Adelaide Football Club fanatic so we went to the Rest Point Casino to watch one of the NAB Cup games. Although the end result was disappointing, it was great to see so many of the rookies getting their first run in the AFL.

H. BRUNY ISLAND was highly recommended to us by Kerrie. We had some great experiences here, tasting Bruny Island Cheese, outstanding scenery, but my favourite was “Get Shucked”, take that anyway you like ☺, oysters caught that morning being shucked as you watch! Get Shucked is a delightful little cafĂ© style outlet where you can sit inside or alfresco while eating your natural oysters and enjoying a glass of local wine. Delish…

K. HOBART has so much to offer. Trevor loved the harbours and the boats, the views from Mount Wellington

Mary watching a Salamanca Market's Busker

I loved the Salamanca Markets, the controversial MONA Museum with it’s historic and modern day art. Some exhibitions just have to be seen to be believed and then there could be a twist!

From Hobart we also visited the very interesting historic township of
RICHMOND, this was a feel good place!
Richmond Bridge is the oldest bridge still in use in Tasmania
The under bridge dwellers!

Australia's oldest existing Catholic Church 1836

Whilst in Hobart we had solar panels put on our Winnebago to give us more battery power when free camping. The guys did a good job and because they had a special on at the time we saved $1,300, supplied and fitted. We haven’t had to use our generator since the panels were installed.

L. PORT HUON – Once again we met up with Christina and Malcolm for a few days and were lucky enough to share some wonderful experiences together.

One of many beautiful wooden carvings depicting outstanding citizens.

O. TAHUNE FOREST is mind blowing! How clever was the Mayor at the time to come up with such an outstanding tourist attraction that not only reinvigorated his dying community but made it possible for thousands of tourist to enjoy it without leaving a bigger footprint.

R. PORT ARTHUR – It wasn’t until I arrived in Port Arthur that I could recognise some of the things we had seen whilst on our Honeymoon in Tasmania 36 years ago in May. ☺

Happy 36th Wedding Anniversary
This non-denominational Church in Port Arthur Prison sat 1,200 people.

A cruise around the small children's prison island!
